The Shape of Belonging
Gallery 402, Utah Valley University, Orem, UT
Feb. 2024
Perhaps it’s a home, a room, or open land, perhaps you’re alone, with other things, or people. What shape does belonging take? Perhaps it’s expansive, or closely-knit; what shape does your body make while it is all around you? Consider the shape of its absence. Perhaps you know how this void can fill a home, how the lack of belonging can affect your body as well as belonging can. What we hope would be freely granted or easily found, is not always. A sense of belonging is for everyone, but it certainly won’t take the same shape for all. How can we support this feeling in others?

REPEATING SHAPES, REPEATING FORMS
Gallery on 6th, Utah Valley University, Orem, UT
Oct.-Nov. 2024
A primary principle in growth and development is repetition. For the artist, this principle is why we describe our work as a ‘practice’. Imagine a knitted blanket that you might wrap yourself in. While you cannot count each of its stitches, or maybe even distinguish them individually, the repetitive action of their making is what surrounds you all the same. As you explore this exhibition we invite you to meditate on the labor that was performed again and again, the ideas that were turned over and over; how the artists’ creative rhythm brought about the works of art before you.
